In a rare episode for Cyprus, Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis beat Ivan Ljubicic at the quarter finals of the Australian Open on Tuesday, by beating him in five sets: 6:4, 6:2, 4:6, 3:6, 6:3.

In a tense finish, Baghdatis, who took the first two sets, but lost the second two, beat Ljubicic in the final set at just after 16.15 Cyprus time.

Baghdatis is ranked 54th ranked player in the world, thus making Tuesday’s match the biggest achievement of his career.

This is the first time that a Cypriot has reached the quarter or semi-finals.
