The new Technological University of Cyprus will receive its first students in September 2007, Cyprus Education and Culture Minister Pefkios Georgiades and President of the University’s Temporary Administration Committee Andreas Demetriou announced on Thursday.

The University will be based in the southern coastal town of Limassol and will have eight classes in five faculties.

These are the Faculty of Geotechnical Sciences and Environment Management, the Faculty of Technological Applications, the Faculty of Administration and Economy, the Faculty of Health Services and the Faculty of Applied Arts and Communication.

Georgiades said that the functioning of the University will contribute to the implementation of the goal to expand the public university education in Cyprus, so that a big part of our 20 thousand students will be able to study on the island.

Cyprus currently has only one university, but up to four private colleges are expected to convert to university status in 2006.

Demetriou said the Temporary Administration Committee is currently holding a study on how the University will develop long-term and which kind of university campus will host the University’s activities during the next 10 – 20 years.
