The UN believes that conditions for the resumption of talks to solve the Cyprus problem are still absent, according to reports during Wednesday’s unofficial debate on Cyprus at the UN Security Council.

Deputy Secretary General Anabi who reiterated what was said some months ago after a visit to the island by UN officials.

However, during the debate, the members were positive on resuming the Secretary-General’s mission of good offices, although the British representative said that before these begin, the conditions must be clarified, as well as the views of the sides and what the Secretary-General is looking for.

Since the rejection by Greek Cypriots of the UN-backed plan to reunited the island in April 2004, the Cyprus problem has been in stalemate, with the leadership on both sides engaging in almost daily verbal attacks on each other.
