Cyprus Former Attorney General Solon Nikitas passed away on Saturday at the age of 68.

Nikitas was sworn in as Attorney General in April 2003.

In a rare move for Cyprus, Nikitas had handed over his resignation to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos ahead of time in May 2005, after the High Court acquitted former Minister of Health Constantina Akkelidou.

Akkelidou had been convicted by the Nicosia District Court after being found guilty for interfering with the course of justice but amid an atmosphere of intense lobbying by Akkelidou’s allies, she was acquitted in the Supreme Court.

On resigning Nikitas made it clear that he felt there had bene political interference in the judicial process.

He leaves a wife and two children.
