The number of road accidents in Cyprus reported to the police decreased to 3,284 in 2004 compared to 3,777 in 2003 and human casualties in road accidents were 117 persons killed and 3,176 persons injured in 2004, as against 97 dead and 3,411 injured in 2003, the annual report “Transport Statistics”for the year 2004 says.

The report also says that during 2004, 4,297 vessels arrived at the various ports of Cyprus compared to 4,375 in 2003. Of these 3,357 or 78,1% arrived at Limassol port, 712 or 16,6% called at Larnaca port and 228 ships at other ports.

At the end of 2004, there were 1,913 ships on the Cyprus Register (with a total of 23,059,919 gross registered tonnage), as against 2,031 ships in 2003, (with a total of 24,232,757 gross registered tonnage).

Civil aircraft landings increased during 2004 and totalled 30,146, compared to 29,177 in 2003. Passenger arrivals through airports increased to 3,210,658 in 2004, compared to 3,041,409 in 2003.

The broad Transport, Storage and Communication in Cyprus sector registered in 2003 an increase of 1.8% on the gross output, at current prices and amounted to CYP 869.3 mn in 2003, compared with CYP 853.7 mn in 2002.

The report said that the value added of the sector increased to CYP 531.6 mn in 2003, from CYP 528.7 mn in 2002 and its share of GDP was 7.3% at current market prices.

Motor vehicles newly registered during 2004, increased by 33.9% to 54,037 from 40,362 in 2003. Private saloon cars newly registered increased by 50,4% to 42,068 from 27,969 in 2003.

Vehicles of all types and categories on the Register of the Land Transport Department, at the end of 2004 totalled 600,942, compared to 574,467 at the end of 2003.
