Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the position of the Russian Federation on the Cyprus problem is based on principles and the respect of lawfulness, noting that he did not see any change in policy on behalf of Russia.

Commenting on a statement reportedly made by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the necessity to lift the ‘isolation’ of Turkish Cypriots, after a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chrysostomides said ‘the position of the Russian Federation is known.’

Asked if any clarifications would be requested, Chrysostomides explained that ‘the diplomatic tactic followed in similar cases will take place.’

Chrysostomides said the Russian position ‘is based on principles and the respect of lawfulness, and in this way I interpret any statements by Mr. Putin in relation to the Cyprus problem.’

‘I see no change in policy. Anyway, very recently, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Mr. Lavrov, was here and submitted in the most official manner the policy of the Russian Federation towards the Cyprus problem,’ he added.
