The government has rejected proposals by the Turkish Cypriot Karpass municipal authorities to set up a students’ assembly comprising Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot schoolchildren.

A small community of Greek Cypriots remained in Karpass after the invasion in 1974 and were enclaved with UN protection. Education of the children of the enclaved of Karpass has always been a thorny issue between the two sides.

Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides described the move set set up an assembly as ‘unacceptable’, saying it was using schoolchildren for propaganda purposes.

“The Greek Cypriot side had no objection to creating conditions for cooperation and a good climate between the two communities in order to promote the effort for a solution and the reunification of our country,” he added.
