The question of Cyprus and Turkey’s obligation to sign a protocol to its customs union agreement with the European Union were the focus of a meeting here today between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, diplomatic sources have said.

They described the 30-minute long meeting as very good.

Papadopoulos and Karamanlis met at the request of the Greek premier who briefed the Cypriot President about his discussions last night with Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during which they talked about Cyprus and Ankara’s obligation to sign the protocol extending its customs union agreement to all ten new EU member states, including Cyprus.

Karamanlis and Papadopoulos, accompanied by their aides, met here before the official start of the European Council, which ends on Wednesday.
