Cypriot Minister meets UN official in Geneva

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou met this morning in Geneva with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louis Arbour.

Iacovou told CNA that he discussed with Arbour the institutions to protect human rights in the Republic of Cyprus and the topic ‘Human rights in Cyprus,’ which is on the agenda of the UN Committee on Human Rights.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

Today, Iacovou will address the 61st session of the UN Committee on Human Rights, which is taking place in Geneva with the participation of 65 ministers.

He will also meet with the Director General of the International Labour Office and the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Tonight, Iacovou will travel to Brussels to participate in the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, which will convene on Wednesday and Thursday.
