Cypriot parties agree to promote disengagement

Leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties had today their regular meeting under the auspices of the Slovak embassy in Cyprus, during which they exchanged views ”on the issue of demilitarization of Nicosia and how it will contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem which remains our main target”.

A joint communique issued after the meeting says ”they agreed to promote the issue of disengagement which both sides have requested it from time to time through the positions they expressed”.

”They also support the need for comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem and the demilitarization of the all island”, the communique says.

The Head of the United Nations Mission in Cyprus and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General here Michael Moller was present at the part of the meeting, during which the results of the Island Divide Public Opinion Poll were represented.

The next regular meeting of the leaders and the representatives of the political parties will be held on the 30th of May 2007 at 10.30 a.m.
