EUROSTAT: Cyprus unemployment drops, still above 15%

Unemployment in Cyprus has dropped to 15.4% of the active population, reaching 67,000 persons, according to the Euro area seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate.


A small decline was registered in Greece and in the EU, while unemployment in the Eurozone remained steady, Eurostat said.
The EA18 seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.5% in August, while in the EU28 unemployment rate was 10.1% in August, the lowest value since February 2012.
Referring to Cyprus’ performance, there was a decline in unemployment for the fifth consecutive month with the unemployment rate for men being 16.9%, women 13.9% and in young people under 25 at 37.1%. The average unemployment rate in the Eurozone for men was 11.2%, women 11.7% and young people under 25 it was 23.3%.
Finland marked the highest increase in unemployment within a year, (from 8.1% to 8.6%) and France (from 10.2% to 10.5%), while the countries with the greatest decrease were Portugal (from 16.1% to 14.0%) and Spain (from 26.1% to 24.4%).
In August, the EU had 24.642 mln unemployed people, of which 18.33 mln were in the Eurozone. Within a year, unemployment in the Eurozone dropped by 834,000 persons.
In August, 4.989 mln young persons (under 25) were unemployed in the EU28 of whom 3.33 mln in the Euro area.
