A high-level delegation from the European Investment Bank (EIB) is expected to pay a visit to Cyprus on Friday, September 19, in order to sign new financing instruments in support of the Cypriot economy.

As CNA learns, the delegation will be headed by EIB President Werner Hoyer and EIB Vice President Mihai Tanasescu and will have contacts with the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, the country`s Finance Minister Harris Georgiades and other officials.

The agenda of talks spans over the whole range of cooperation between the EIB and the Republic of Cyprus, including inter alia the financing of various sectors of the economy, support schemes for SMEs and for combating unemployment, as well as Cyprus-specific issues, such as the financing of an LNG terminal at Vassiliko, in the southern coast of the island.

Former Greek Government Spokesman and MP Evangelos Antonaros, who will also be part of the delegation, in his capacity as EIB communication advisor for Cyprus and Greece, has told CNA that Hoyer is paying a visit to Cyprus for the fourth time in the last 12 months, Cyprus being thus – along with Greece – one of his most-visited countries.

This shows the particular interest in supporting the efforts for Cyprus` economic recovery, through financing and guarantee schemes for all of the island`s production sectors, Antonaros noted.

He added moreover that Cyprus is the second country, after Greece, where the Trade Finance Facility is applied, aiming at providing guarantees for cross-border trade.

The EIB renewed last April its cooperation with the Cooperative Central Bank of Cyprus authorizing a new 50 mln euros credit line for SMEs. This came after the signing, in the end of 2013, of two support schemes for Cypriot SMEs, worth 150 mln euros.
