Cyprus joins the world in Earth Hour campaign

Hundreds of millions of citizens in over 135 countries around the world will join on Saturday evening in the framework of Earth Hour campaign, switching off lights for an hour, at 2030 local time.

According to the website of Cyprus` Environment Commissioner Ioanna Panayiotou, "for one hour we will also switch off the lights symbolically to convey to the whole of humanity the message for action to protect the planet and to send a message to the world leaders that they must take serious decisions to protect humanity from climate change".

The main event in Cyprus will be held at the Presidential Palace on Saturday evening, when the lights will go off for an hour in the presence of President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, members of the Council of Ministers, and other officials and representatives of services and organisations.

On Saturday morning, an event will be held in the park next to the Presidential Palace, with workshops for all ages, informative material, music and songs.

On Friday, schoolchildren visited the House of Representatives and presented material they had prepared on climate change, and discussed the issue with members of the Environment Committee.
