Nearly two in three Cypriots use social media, according to the latest results of the annual survey on communication technologies usage.
The survey found that 61.2% of Internet users participate in social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
The most popular internet activities are finding information about goods or services (90.6%) and sending/receiving e-mails (75.6%).
Internet purchases are still in their infancy, however. Only 17.2 % made online orders for goods and services in 2011. More than half of these (52%) were for travel arrangements such as tickets, hotels and car hire.
Households with children (90.6%) were more likely to have a computer than households without (59.2%). Overall, the percentage of households with access to a computer was 70% in 2012 compared with 63.9% in 2011.
Laptops are overtaking desktop computers. The percentage of households with access to a laptop computer rose to 62.4% from 55.5% in 2011, while the percentage of households with access to a desktop computer fell to 28.8% from 33.6% in 2011.
Internet access in households continued to increase, reaching 61.8% in 2012 compared with 57.4% in 2011. Individuals using the Internet rose from 56.9% in 2011 to 60.7% in 2012.
Broadband now accounts for 97.9% of internet connections, while only 16.2% of households with Internet access have a mobile connection to the Internet (via handset/ broadband card/ USB).
Not surprisingly people aged 16 – 24 (89.2%) and students (96.0%) use the Internet the most.
Only 16.4% of individuals aged 65 – 74 use the Internet. Men (61.1%) use the Internet more frequently than women (54.8%).
