Glasgow airport was closed on Friday after a passenger jet had to be evacuated on the runway shortly before takeoff because of smoke in the cabin, airport officials said.

Three people were taken to hospital after the emergency evacuation from the Jet2 Boeing 737-800 aircraft to Alicante, Spain, said a spokesman for Scotland's biggest airport. The plane was carrying 189 passengers, the airline said.

"The airport remains closed as the plane is still sitting halfway down the runway," said the spokesman. He said the airport was expected to reopen soon.

He said it was not yet clear what had caused the smoke.
