CYPRUS: Two-day Economist Conference

The priorities of the Cypriot EU – Presidency are the main topic of the forthcoming two-day Economist Conference, which will take place on October 8th-9th 2012 at the Hilton Park Nicosia Hotel. The two-day summit is being organized under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union and in collaboration with the European Parliament Office in Cyprus and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus.

In need of a vision for Europe’s future, high-level speakers will provide an outline of the priorities imposed by the climate of the continuing economic crisis.

The new financial framework 2014-2020, the creation of a banking union in Europe, the challenges that have to be met in regards to the financial transgression concerning countries such as Greece and Cyprus, as well as the relations between the European countries shall be thoroughly discussed during the summit’s sessions.

Top-flight speakers lined up for the event include the Vice-president of the European Parliament Anni Podimata, the Dep. Director General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission Maarten Verwey, the Director of the Offices in Europe of the IMF Emmanuel van der Mennsbrugghe, Ambassador Vladimir Chizhov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the EU, US Ambassador to the EU William Kennard, high-level executives from the banking sector, as well as prominent businessmen.

Recent developments in the energy, tourism, real estate and digital technology sectors will also be discussed during the two-day Economist event.

The Economist’s Europe Editor John Peet as well as the Regional Director for Europe of the Economist Intelligence Unit Laza Kekic shall provide a forecast on the Cypriot economy, while the President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias shall address the closing dinner of the conference with a speech on the political vision for the future of Europe.
