Cyprus House President Marios Garoyian expressed his satisfaction for the cooperation between the parliaments of Cyprus and Armenia, in the framework of international organizations, assuring that Cyprus wants to contribute to the promotion of the visions and strategy planning of Armenia, playing a bridging role between its European partners and the states which are friendly to Cyprus, such as Armenia.

Addressing the plenary of the National Assembly of Armenia, where he is paying a two-day official visit, Garoyian noted the intention to broaden the relations between the two countries in the financial and trade field, and briefed the Armenian MPs on the Cyprus question and the ongoing direct negotiations aiming at the settlement of the Cyprus issue.

He expressed the gratitude of Cyprus for the stable and based on principles support of Armenia to its just struggle for the reunification of the country and the people, through a peaceful dialogue to achieve a just and viable settlement.

Garoyian referred to his Armenian origin, while talking about the Armenian genocide, he noted that Cyprus was the country who welcomed the Armenians who fled after the genocide.

He also stressed that Cyprus based on positions of principles supports the Armenian people and its just causes without hesitation.

“There is no doubt that this mutual support and solidarity will continue and be further strengthened through our institutionalized cooperation, and further than that, on issues of vital important for our countries and to avert negative actions on either of them,” he added.

Referring to the Cyprus question and the direct negotiations, Garoyian said that the Turkish Cypriot side only responds to Ankara’s calls and as a result of this the progress to the negotiations is minimal and not in the most important issues.

Garoyian underlined that the Greek Cypriot side insists in searching and achieving a bizonal, bicommunal federation, on the basis of the High Level Agreements of 1977 and 1979, the UN relevant resolutions and the principles and values of the EU.
“But the key,” Garoyian added, “lies in Ankara” noting that “we want a settlement by the Cypriots for the Cypriots.”

He underlined that the international community must stop to encourage through tolerance, and sometimes through reward, the unlawful and illegal behaviour of Turkey with regard to the Cyprus question and not only that.

“It is not possible for a country which systematically disregards and breaches the state of law, the international law and international rights, both domestically and in relation to its neighbours, to join the UN Security Council, the guardian of the international law,” he added.

Later on Garoyian met with the President of the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan, whom he invited to pay an official visit to Cyprus.
