A Faculty of Medicine to be established in Cyprus

The Council of Ministers approved, during its last session, the regulations regarding the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine in the University of Cyprus.

According to an announcement, issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine in Cyprus is an important step forward to the efforts being made for turning Cyprus into an international and regional centre of higher education and research.

In addition, the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cyprus will provide lifelong postgraduate training to Cypriot doctors and nurses. This is “something that will benefit the public as well as the private hospitals of Cyprus”, it is added in the announcement.

According to the Ministry of Education and Culture, the cost for the establishment of the Faculty is estimated to reach the amount of 46.8 million Euro. The annual operating cost of the Faculty is expected to reach 12.1 million Euro.

The Ministries of Education and Culture, Health, Finance, the Planning Bureau and the Cyprus Medical Association contributed to the discussions for the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine.

The Faculty of Medicine is expected to accept the first students by 2013.
