TRANSPORT: Promoting sustainable mobility in Cyprus, bus e-tickets

The Minister of Transport has announced that his department is actively promoting viable mobility, having expanded its activities.


 
Addressing the 4th Cyprus Sustainable Mobility and Intelligent Transport Conference, Marios Demetriades said it has expanded its activities regarding mobility through the development of public transport, planning and implementing infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists and investigating the possibility and viability of a tram service in Nicosia.
He said the ministry is promoting the development and implementation of viable Urban Mobility Plans for every town as well as developing a strategic Transport Plan for the whole of Cyprus and upgrading as well as modernising design standards.
Sustainable mobility, he said, helps in saving resources, serving the real needs of citizens, restarting the economy and, above all, improving the quality of life.
Demetraides said the Ministry is already promoting a package of sustainable mobility actions, which is co-funded by the European Cohesion Fund of the European Union. The package includes actions for the Nicosia Integrated Mobility Plan and similar plans for other cities of Cyprus.
In regard to public bus transport, the Minister said they are working to upgrade the existing system, reviewing the services offered and the introduction of telematic technologies with e-ticketing.
The two-day conference also concentrated on smart mobility which includes cycling, logistics and intelligent transport systems workshop.
