INDIA: Cyprus celebrates Gandhi Jayanti

Mahatma Gandhi's 145th birth anniversary was celebrated yesterday by the High Commission of India in Nicosia.

At Gandhi ji’s bust at the Parliament Park floral tributes were also paid to Gandhi by High Commissioner Ravi Bangar and House President Yiannakis Omirou.

The event was attended by MPs, municipal councilors, senior officers, media personnel and members of the Indian community in Cyprus.
The event concluded with the playing of Gandhiji's favorite Bhajans – devotional songs – and a reception.

Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday celebrated in India to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation".

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated yearly on 2 October. It is one of the three official declared national holidays of India, observed in all of its states and union territories.

Gandhi Jayanti is marked by prayer services and tributes all over India, especially at Raj Ghat, Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi where he was cremated.
