The Council of Ministers approved today and tabled before the House of Representatives a bill to amend current legislation which would allow the appointment of Deputy Ministers at six ministries.

Speaking to the press after today’s Cabinet meeting, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides did not specify which Ministries will have a Deputy Minister, pending approval of the bill by the House.

He explained that the legislation is not entirely complete and needs to be amended before responsibilities of specific ministries are assigned to specific Deputy Ministries.

"The President of the Republic stressed that the appointment of Deputy Ministers will be an incision into the political affairs of Cyprus and it will serve government functionality and Cyprus’ representation to the EU,” he added.

Stylianides said that the creation of these posts should not put any additional expenses on government costs.

“We hope they will serve the public interest and help attract foreign investment to Cyprus”, he concluded.
