EU Ministers adopted Thursday, for the first time, Council conculsions on the protection of soft targets from terrorist attacks.

The conclusions were adopted by the Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs during the JHA Council, which took place in Luxembourg under the Cyprus EU Presidency.

The adoption of the conclusions was an initiative of the Cyprus Presidency.

Cyprus Minister of the Interior Eleni Mavrou, who chaired the meeting, said that it is important to “ensure free access to the public in such places but also effectively implement security measures."

The conclusions include threat assessment, coordination and exchange of views through best practices, conducting exercises and the adoption of appropriate public awareness programs.

In addition, Mavrou said that Cyprus is as of today part of the team of member states which share data on fingerprints and genetic material, thus enhancing and upgrading cross-border cooperation in combating terrorism and cross-border crime.
