Former Cyprus Finance Minister Michalis Sarris was released from custody in the Turkish-occupied north of the island late on Thursday, where he was held for a week in a mysterious case of an “unlawful act” on suspicion of alleged sexual offences.
The Turkish Cypriot courts, that lack international recognition, set bail at 47,000 euros and expect Sarris to reappear next month.
Both Greek and Turkish Cypriot news reports suggested that the allegations of ''unnatural intercourse, conspiracy to commit a crime and indecent attack'' were baseless and the key underaged witnesses were probably coerced into a confession by Turkish Cypriot police.
The European Parliament issued a press release on Wednesday referring to the arrest of Sarris noting that MEPs called for his immediate release.
