An official Polish delegation conveyed on Friday to Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos a message requesting Cyprus’ support in Poland’s bid to secure the hosting of the two-yearly EXPO 2012 international exhibition in the city of Wroclaw with the theme ”The Culture of Leisure in World Economics.”
The Polish President’s Special Representative, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Krzysztof Jan Kurzydlowski, who handed over the letter to President Papadopoulos in Nicosia, told a press conference on Friday that the message was warmly received.
Polish Ambassador to Cyprus Zbigniew Szymanski said the formal letter was handed over on Friday morning to President Papadopoulos, adding that although it was ”very early” to say what Cyprus’ stance would be, he was optimistic.
Kurzydlowski said ”we did not expect an immediate response to this letter,” adding that ”it was very warmly received.”
”I would also like to underline that the reason for my coming is to convey this letter but also I am here to discuss other matters of our collaboration between Cyprus and Poland and in particular as someone responsible in Poland for science in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, I would like to take this visit as a good one for extending our collaboration in science and higher education,” he said.
Deputy Mayor of Wroclaw Jaroslaw Obremski said there were no other European candidates for EXPO 2012 and expressed hope that Cyprus would support Poland‘s bid.
During the presentation of the bid, it was mentioned that Wroclaw ”is a beautiful city of great potential, is very open and tolerant, with excellent localisations,” and that ”it is not only Wroclaw‘s bid, it is also Poland‘s bid.”
‘The campaign to host EXPO 2012 in Wroclaw is a national project engaging individuals and institutions at the highest levels of the government. An EXPO in Wroclaw will offer people of the world an outstanding chance to discover the youth and vitality of the New Europe. The theme for Poland‘s EXPO underscores the distinct, yet essential, roles leisure plays in diverse cultures and economies around the globe. Due to its unique history, Wroclaw holds a special place in the world community. Wroclaw is an extraordinary city with enormous international appeal,” according to a representative of the city, who presented the advantages of hosting the exhibition there.
The final vote will be taken by the 98 member countries of the International Fair Organisation in December 2007.
