A Syrian cargo ship traveling from Egypt to Syria, carrying 1,300 tones of sugar, sank early this morning 94 nautical miles east of Cyprus, due to rough seas.
Seven persons were aboard the ship. Six of them have been saved while the seventh one is missing.
A Cyprus Police spokeswoman said that around 0540 (0340 GMT) information was given to the Police through the Coordination Centre for Research and Rescue that a man was picked up by a German frigate, 85 nautical miles off Cyprus’ coast, between Cyprus, Lebanon and Israel.
He said that around 0645 a helicopter of Cyprus Police Airwing (CPAW) took off from Larnaca Airport. At the same time a vessel of the Port and Marine Police sailed off.
The spokeswoman said that around 0730 policemen aboard the helicopter spotted five people, who were winched off a life raft onto a police helicopter.
They were taken to another German frigate which was in the area, participating in the search, where they were given First Aid, as they suffered from hypothermia.
At 1030 the helicopter took them to Larnaca Airport from where they were taken to Larnaca General Hospital by ambulance.
The man who was first spotted remained on the German frigate which gave the information about the wreckage.
Research at the area continues by the vessel of the Port and Marine Police, since a person who was aboard the Syrian cargo ship is still missing.
