TAINAN, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Da-Cheng Lee and Hau-Yun Deng, two sophomores from the College of Medicine at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) , southern Taiwan, took part in the "Click Taiwan " competition recently, which is hosted annually by the Chunghwa Telecom Foundation, to shorten the digital gap between the city and remote areas.
Lee and Deng’s intriguing documentary video about the aboriginal village of the Pangcah won the first place in the competition.
To win the contest, the participants who were sent to an aboriginal village for a period of 15-25 days were required to produce a video recording the highlights of their stay, at the same time as carrying out community service. In addition to encourage young people to take actions to understand Taiwan further, new expertise and capabilities were also introduced to the tribe.
Though winning the prize, Lee admitted that there was a limit to the influence that they had on the children. “In order to make a real impact on the children, we will need to stay in the tribe longer to make a difference,” Deng added.
Lee and Deng recalled they noticed the activity from seniors of their department. “Later, we learned more about the project, and found that the scheme doesn’t choose a specific topic for you to work.” Deng continues.
During their stay in the village, they held an after-school class for many children there. “The foundation only gave us a basic introduction and brief instructions of we would do there,” says Lee. “So we had to figure out what to do by ourselves.”
“We decided to start an after-school class after discussing with the instructor there after we saw there were so many children,” Deng adds.
"We found that in this area, villagers think better job offers were only available in cities, so most young people moved to cities, leaving children and the elderly at the tribal village, which not only decreased the tribal population, but leaded to the loss of their culture."
