Bid unveils delegation and campaign theme for 125th IOC session: “History in the Making”
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Istanbul 2020 today confirmed its official delegation for the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, to be headed by Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and unveiled their theme for the climax of the campaign: “History in the Making”.
Istanbul 2020’s delegation is being led by the most senior government representatives in Turkey at every level. Prime Minister Erdoğan will fly to Argentina direct from the G20 conference in St. Petersburg. The Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey for Economic and Financial Affairs, Ali Babacan; the Minister for Youth and Sport, Suat Kılıç; and the Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbaş, will all attend.
They will bolster a strong Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee led by IOC member and President of the Turkish National Olympic Committee and World Archery Federation, Professor Uğur Erdener, and Istanbul 2020 Bid Chairman, Hasan Arat. The delegation will also include Istanbul 2020 CEO, Ali Kiremitçioğlu; Istanbul 2020 Sports Director, Alp Berker; Turkish NOC Secretary General, Neşe Gündoğan; Paralympian, archer and Istanbul 2020 Ambassador, Gizem Girişmen; and Çağla Büyükakçay, Turkey’s number one female tennis player.
Istanbul 2020 will be unveiling the surprise element of their delegation on 5 September.
Speaking from the Istanbul 2020 ‘Olympic training camp’ in Buenos Aires, Hasan Arat said:
“‘History in the making’ was a natural choice as the theme for the last days of our campaign. Istanbul 2020 offers the Olympic Movement a number of historic firsts: the first Games in Turkey; the first Games staged across two continents simultaneously; the first Games in a nation where nearly half the population is under-25. By choosing Istanbul 2020, the IOC will be choosing to make history.”
The Istanbul 2020 delegation will also include a number of senior business leaders, including representatives of five of Istanbul 2020’s sponsors: Ali Koç, Koç Holding Board Member; Ferit F. Şahenk, Doğuş Holding CEO and Chairman; Temel Kotil, Turkish Airlines CEO; Süreyya Ciliv, Turkcell CEO; and Mehmet Uçan, Yıldız Holding Sports Director.
Hasan Arat added:
“We are delighted that we will have the Prime Minister and other senior Turkish government officials with us in Buenos Aires. Istanbul 2020 has enjoyed full government support from the very moment the Prime Minister personally launched our bid over two years ago. So it is fitting that he will be here with us as our campaign to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Turkey for the first time comes to its conclusion.
“For over twenty years, the Turkish nation has harboured a dream to bring the Games to the country. We hope that 7 September will soon be celebrated as the historic day that we were given the honour of realising our dream.
“Preparations at our ‘Olympic training camp’ are going well and we are excited to make our final presentations to the IOC. We still have a few more surprises to come, but soon all will be revealed. As we approach the end of the bid we remain focused and optimistic, and, like any athlete in an Olympic final, we are ready to give everything until the very last second.”
