The Cyprus police are stepping up their efforts to combat the phenomenon of internet related offences in particular as regards under age girls, spokesman Andreas Angelides has said.
In statements to the press, Angelides called on all young girls not to accept friend requests on social networks from people they do not know personally.
Complaints on child pornography related offences have increased this year, he said, adding that so far there have been 30 while in the whole of 2013 there were 23.
Referring to a recent complaint by a 14 year old girl, Angelides said a person had befriended her on Facebook through false pretences and had forced her to email him ten photographs of herself.
The police have arrested a 17 year old youth and confiscated two computers from his house which contained a number of photographs and in particular of under age girls.
Further investigations have revealed that the fake account is also managed by another person in Greece and the police have been in touch with Interpol Greece.
