Russian and Turkish FMs to discuss Cyprus issue

July 02, 2009

The Cyprus problem as well as other international and regional issues are on the agenda of Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Davutoglu’s working visit to Moscow, which began Wednesday.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andrei Nesterenko has said that Davutoglu and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov will discuss prospects for a settlement in Iraq and the Middle East, the situation regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, the situation in Transcaucasia and Central Asia, as well as the current situation concerning a Cyprus settlement and cooperation in international organisations.

Nesterenko noted that this is Davutoglu’s first visit to Moscow since his appointment as Foreign Minister, during which he will also exchange views with Lavrov on bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the Black Sea region.

“The visit constitutes the continuation of close collaboration between the Foreign Affairs Ministries of the two states and our political dialogue as a whole, which acquires an even more constructive and open character”, he added.

The Russian FM spokesman said that in the past four years more than ten high level meetings have taken place between the two countries.
